JJW, 3 responses.

Are you claiming that the "cross-generational nature of social security" is a positive? Isn't that just a nicer way of saying "unfunded pension plan" or "ponzi scheme?"

Do you have any idea how much "nickel and diming" it would take to get workers down to an expected lifetime return as low as the existing system? I mean, it'd take a whole lot to catch up to the vig the federal government takes out now...

Finally, the program's not going to survive as is regardless. There are too many retirees coming and too few people paying into the system. Don't blame the coming changes to the program, which are inevitable, on the hope of creating a system that's self-funded and involves the generation of actual wealth for future participants.

Private accounts undermines the very cross-generational nature of social security: http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2008_09/014810.php How does the program survive if you're siphoning off account holders like this? And what about the costs of maintaining the fund? There are a lot of Wall Street types who would like to nickel and dime account holders for all they're worth.
