Westmoreland Warns of Government Shutdown

Politico reports:

A prominent Republican congressman raised the specter Friday of a government shutdown if the GOP wins control of the House.

Speaking to hundreds of activists gathered at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington for the Faith and Freedom Conference, Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.) urged the audience to stand with House Republicans when they go toe-to-toe with President Barack Obama.

Westmoreland said his caucus – presuming it takes control of the House come November – aims to pass spending bills that Obama is likely to veto. He predicted Republicans would not be able to override such a veto, creating a standoff that could cause Congress to grind to a halt.

“If the government shuts down, we want you with us,” he said.

The congressman recalled a similar shutdown that took place in 1995, when Newt Gingrich – also a speaker at the conference – was serving as House speaker. A future standstill could temporarily close national parks or delay payments from the government, Westmoreland speculated.

That’s the Republican party we know and love. Always fighting the good fight for the wrong people.

Good governance, NO, any governance HELL NO.

The GOP is a party of complete fools and incompetents. Dangerous for the USA in every regard.

Is Compromise really such a horrible thing? I realize it hasn’t been attempted by the right for quite a while, and Republicans are really out of practice at it. Amazingly our goverment of the past used to manage not to see every single issue as the most important issue of the decade and yes, they did compromise. Somehow we as a nation survived those less than ideological times, and we can again.

Funny how Democrats never once threatened to shut down Government under Bush. Maybe they take their oaths of office seriously.

One thing I promise though, the spending bills they try to pass won’t pass the CBO. It will be huge tax breaks for the rich, virtually no spending cuts, and promises that this will balance the budget.
Of course he is ignoring that Obama can only veto bills that have passed both the House and Senate, and no way in hell are Democrats in the Senate going to go along with the house. So is he saying he doesn’t know how Congress works, or is he being disingenuous?

I promise they will try to shut down the Government, but for absolutely no good effect. Holding one House of Congress doesn’t give them dictatorial powers. They should either negotiate in good faith or resign.

In fact, you might note that despite tremendous pressure from the most politically active parts of their base, the Democrats never blocked any Iraq War funding bills.

So is he saying he doesn’t know how Congress works, or is he being disingenuous?

You didn’t know that the man is an idiot? This should help jog your memory:

Good idea. It worked sooooo well last time.

The definition of insanity is to repeat the same thing while expecting a different outcome. The GOP is certifiable.
