dfl: A poll taken in 2008 showed that 32% of Vermonters now identify themselves as liberal. That's the highest percentage of any state in the Union, and second only to D.C.

Vermont was forever changed when it became the Mecca for counterculture liberals in the 1970s. The 200,000 + lefties (sometimes known as Flatlanders by the orginal Vermonters) who moved there were much more politcally active than the generally apolitical Green Mountainers and they have taken political control over the state. It is hard to believe that Ronald Reagan won Vermont with 58 % of the vote as recently as 1984.
