    krove: I don’t care why they’re doing it. Why should we care???If someone has a grievance, it is up to THEM to state that grievance in proper channels. It’s not up to US to reach out to THEM–we are the aggrieved party here! In a world connected by the Internet, cell phones, and every other electronic media, there is plenty of opportunity to express one’s grievances. If they don’t, and if they resort to the language of violence instead, we should answer them in the language that they understand. They gave up the right to be “understood” the moment they started taking American hostages by force. At that moment, they started a fight. Marc Cooper, who is a Leftist but one with a conscience, said this once about people like you:”Two generations of American leftists who lack the political sensibility and even the simple emotional language that would allow them to see their own fellow citizens, even transitorily, as victims rather than victimizers.” — Marc Cooper, October 2001American citizens were the VICTIMS. Somali pirates were the VICTIMIZERS. Chew on that for a while.

    sinz, most righties I find are either in the Bush/Cheney mold of draft dodgers. Or have never actually fired shot in anger. In which case they are unfit to comment.

    Oh God krove, you’re a typical lefty looking for any kind of typical left-wing excuse for anyone engaging in criminal behavior. I’ve got new for you. They’re doing it for two reasons, money, and they fact that they live in a lawless country where they can get away with it, at least until they messed with the USA.

    Andy I offered no excuse. I just proffered some areas to be looked at.Somalia is a righties dream. The ultimate country of limited government. Perhaps you might like to live there. No tax, no SS, no medicare, no eduction, no medicaid. seems like fun.

    I was referring to your comments about overfishing and pollution that doesn’t seem to be there anymore. That was a completely absurd statement. Yea, Somalia’s a real righties dream. Not exactly. There’s a HUGE difference between limited government and no government. People on the right like law and order for one thing.

    nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy to Somalia, tells me: “Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead, and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury you name it.” Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to “dispose” of cheaply. When I asked Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: “Nothing. There has been no clean-up, no compensation, and no prevention.”At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalias seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish-stocks by over-exploitation and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300m worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea-life is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into Somalias unprotected seas. The local fishermen have suddenly lost their livelihoods, and they are starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: “If nothing is done, there soon wont be much fish left in our coastal waters.”This is the context in which the men we are calling “pirates” have emerged. Everyone agrees they were ordinary Somalian fishermen who at first took speedboats to try to dissuade the dumpers and trawlers, or at least wage a tax on them. They call themselves the Volunteer Coastguard of Somalia and its not hard to see why. In a surreal telephone interview, one of the pirate leaders, Sugule Ali, said their motive was “to stop illegal fishing and dumping in our waters We dont consider ourselves sea bandits. We consider sea bandits [to be] those who illegally fish and dump in our seas and dump waste in our seas and carry weapons in our seas.

    Wait, I found a credible source on the overfishing part,http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,514822,00.htmlThey just mention it at the end of the article, but it seems like more of an indirect starting point as opposed to a reason. Anyhow, this was all done by Europeans, not Americans. The same Europeans who always seem to accuse us of this type of thing.

    After all this strategy has proved so effective against, for example, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Taliban, North Vietnam. A total waste of time and we again look like bullying idiots attacking a third world country with no doubt all kinds of collateral damage pictures of dead women and kids blasted around the world. The surgical way we dealt with this was a million times more effective. Surgery not butchery is the way to deal with this problem.

    That doesn’t exactly say a lot about the dumping. Illegal fishing goes on everywhere, that’s hardly an excuse for piracy.

    krove: I’ll say it again: I don’t care.If Somalis have a gripe against dumping of waste by some perps of European or unknown nationality, they have no right to take their grievances out on American citizens. Captain Phillips and his crew weren’t the ones doing the dumping. And they shouldn’t be scapegoated for it, kidnapped, held hostage, their lives threatened. Finally, it wasn’t even done as a political act, but done as a criminal kidnapping for financial ransom.The rationalizations offered by liberals like you are despicable. Liberals accept anonymous grievance, by anonymous perps, as a rationalization for kidnapping and attempted murder. But somehow, they didn’t consider Timothy McVeigh, who was upset by things like the Waco Massacre, to be similarly justified in bombing the Murrah Federal Building. I guess they only like violence when it’s perpetrated in the service of their own causes–while they maintain plausible deniability.
