In a way, I disagree about the term "moderate" Republican. I think it is quite possible to be a true Conservative and still believe in civil rights and equal opportunity. (Note the difference between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome). I think it is more about what areas one chooses to be role of government. If one believes in limited government (both in power and in taxation), that is conservative. If one believes that the government should provide for equal rights, that not does not make a person less conservative.

Thomas Curtis was a conservative man of principle. I am sure he would have opposed the Obama health care finance law as an unnecessary extension of government power, even while he would have applauded the country for having the courage to elect a black man as president in the first place.

Ironically, he was defeated in his bid for the US Senate by Thomas Eagleton. Now that's shocking (pun intended).

[...] One of the knocks against moderate Republicans have been that we don’t really have any principles. But the fact is we do have values that have long been a part of the GOP. Earlier this year, Geoffrey Kabaservice wrote a series of articles on famous moderates in the GOP. The figures give us a road map for today to claim our seat at the GOP table. I am reposting this series third profile one is on former Congressman Thomas Curtis. [...]

Thanks for this series. As a moderate Republican, it's nice to read this history of "my people." Looking forward to the book.

I have enjoyed reading your articles about moderate republicans and pleased that you have selected less well known, but important republicans. I am looking forward to reading your book.
