Mr. Gibbon -- excellently put. This issue before us is, in my opinion, the nations foremost crisis looking to the future. Aside from saying "come to grips" with our problems, which I agree with, how can we truly rally for a real "change" in education? This problem won't fix itself and throwing money at it won't either. As a straight forward question, do you believe minority students, in particular African-American students, will ever change to meet the standards we would like to see? I believe it is a valid question, because its getting worse, not better. Although we do need to give minorities the same opportunity, we need the same standards for everyone, but like you said, that makes us racists. The African-American community foremost must take a step forward, seek new leadership, and strive for a change in character and morals. And certainly, because I am currently one of them, I believe Caucasian students should not be criticized in any way for their standards for excellence; we should continue to commend them no matter how "racist" others portray us.

Great comment from a paper I'm grading:

"I want to learn and earn the right to make it to the next grade level. I don't want them to pass me because of some program. I want to earn it."

sinz: Our schools need discipline - they need to teach self-control. Maybe not in a militaristic sense, though I'm very pro-military, but part of the solution is actually being able to manage classrooms and schools with real discipline. there are too many weak teachers and administrators who don't know how to stand up for the honor they could bring to their schools and classrooms.

I have a solution, Mr. Gibbon: Restore the military draft. Traditionally, the military drafted even illiterate youngsters into the service. Example: Alvin York was born in poverty, and as a youngster he got into violence and binge drinking. Then during World War I, he got drafted into the Army. And he did pretty well--a national hero, in fact. The military teaches discipline, self-control, and personal honor. And you can learn skills there that can be valuable in civilian life.

there are no solutions until we get at the core of the problem. part of the problem is our inability to come to grips with the problems in our schools.

I'm not sure I agree with you when you say almost every country believes this; certainly not where most of our economic competition comes from. those societies close off education to kids at early grades if they don't show proficiency. point taken, though.

Nice piece. But the following sentence makes no sense whatsoever: "We are a very special country in that we believe all children, regardless of race, creed or income level have an inherent right to an education." Almost every country in the world believes in this.
