I suspect the same is true of this expose as is the Michael Moore stuff – the organization is not nearly as bad as portrayed, nor is it as clean and above-board as portrayed by its spokesman.

The self-proclaimed “Senate’s most outspoken critic of ACORN” isn’t publicly bashing the non-profit group for tapes that appear to show ACORN employees giving advice on how to set up a prostitution service to undercover conservative operatives. Sure, the Louisiana Republican has vaguely referenced “continued news reports of criminal investigations” into ACORN, told folks the Census dropping ACORN as a partner “is a good, common sense move,” and even introduced a measure to cut off federal funding for the organization he’s hounded.

Vitter’s staff did not return Raw Story calls seeking information about his absence during the vote, but ABC’s Jake Tapper “Political Punch” blog reports Vitter’sstaff says the Senator had missed his flight due to a scheduling error and had lobbied others to support the bill over the phone.

Louisiana Democrats, however, have a theory: It all goes back to the D.C. Madam and the fact that Vitter’s digits showed up in her phone records. Oh—and the fact that another Madam, this one from New Orleans, said Vitter was a client of her prostitutes.

In the aftermath of the 2007 D.C. revelation, Vitter acknowledged “a very serious sin” for which he was “completely responsible” and left it there.

The scandal may have come back to bite Vitter by making it extra tough for the Senator to join his 83 colleagues who did stick a fork in ACORN on Monday. If you listen to Louisiana Democrats, at least.

“For months, David Vitter has been leading the charge to deny federal money to ACORN, but as soon as the topic of prostitution comes up, he doesn’t even show up to work,” said Louisiana Democratic Party Spokesman Kevin Franck in a press release.

ACORN is stupid for letting this happen to them, but as usual the GOP’s staunchest critics of vice seem to have a taste for that which they denounce.

In a press release, ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis says, that as “a result of the indefensible action of a handful of our employees,” the group will immediately stop accepting anyone into ACORN office for service programs, will conduct in-service training of staff, and begin an audit “to review all of the systems and processes called into question by the videos,” to be conducted by the group’s Independent Advisory Council. …

“We have all been deeply disturbed by what we’ve seen in some of these videos,” Lewis said. “I must say, on behalf of ACORN’s Board and our Advisory Council, that we will go to whatever lengths necessary to reestablish the public trust. For nearly forty years, ACORN has given voice to communities, and gotten results. Right now, our nearly 500,000 member are working their hearts out for quality, affordable healthcare for every American and to help stop the foreclosure crisis. We must get this process right, so the good work can go forward.”

Well, at least she’s admitting fault and pledging to clean up their act.
