If anyone doubts Mr. Vecchione's assertions, simply search the New York Times archives for the name Brian Chontosh. To date, in "The Paper of Record" who boasts "All the News That's Fit to Print" there are exactly 2 listings, and they are both the same opinion piece written by someone who is not on staff.

Brian Chontosh is a legend in the United States Marine Corps because of his actions in 2003. To read about his heroism, simply go to this website:

http://ourmilitaryheroes.defense.gov/profiles/chontoshB.html

The fact that this man's story is not even covered by the liberal press, never mind made into a movie, proves Mr. Vecchione's point better than any response to the utterly ridiculous assertions by mlindroo, ottovbvs, and other apologists for failure.

Well done Mr. Vecchione.

It may be just my advanced age and having lived Cold War history, but the Cold War is not over and the enemy is winning. Tearing down the Berlin wall was a great and symbolic victory for freedom and liberty but, that was only a battle in the global conflict against totalitarianism and the preservation of freedom and liberty. The war continues and its new front is our living rooms, schools, universities, and the hearts and minds of those who live in America. The Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China very successfully infiltrated our borders with totalitarian and collectivist ideologies while we were busy celebrating the breakup of the Soviet Union and our re-newed economic vigor. The proof is pasted all over our newspapers, TV screens, and the internet.
The Left's Cold War warriors are armed, dangerous and in-power. What is New Majority's plan of action? Smell the coffee and attack each other?

It appears that the Left has gotten its head out of the Cold War, 25 years after it was over. Maybe Mr. Vecchione would like to wake up and smell the coffee.

Where does Vecchione get this nonsense from?........ Actually the late forties/early fifties were the cold war's finest hour. This is when the strategies (containment), alliances (principally Nato) and the US institutions (the Dept of Defense, the CIA, the NSC) were put in place that ultimately resulted in victory after a 45 year struggle. These were the years of the Marshall Plan, the Berlin airlift, the Truman doctrine, victory in the Greek civil war, the Soviet evacuation from Austria, the reconstitution of West Germany and Japan as vibrant economically strong allies, and a host of other minor wins against the Soviet Union.......As it happens I visited the Soviet Union/Eastern Europe on business several times in the late 70's and early 80's and it was completely apparent even then it was on it's last legs and only a matter of time before it imploded.

>... He does this after insulting the Czechs and the Poles by withdrawing support for
> missile defense in their countries.

Utter BS as usual, Vecchione.
A clear majority of Czech and Polish voters actually *OPPOSED* the ballistic missile defense deal! Please do not confuse a few misguided local politicians with "our allies" here. Obama did everybody a favor by canceling yet another harebrained Bush era initiative that would have wasted money, does not work, provides defense against a threat that does not exist and on top of it all does not even make Poland or the Czech Republic "safer."
---
As for 1989, Obama has been quite busy on the foreign policy front recently and made lots of overseas trips. I fail to see the huge importance of a purely backwards-looking commemorative event such as this one. If the Germans are annoyed, let's send Hillary or Biden.
