An important lesson from the fall of the Roman Empire should see more light--that of the multiple civil wars raging througout the end of the empire. These may have been the single most important cause of Rome's fall. We who are facing the biggest economic disaster of our country's history should have already buckled down to deal with it. Instead, much like the Romans and their civil wars, we engage in the same old conflicts over things that we can never agree on. Those must be put aside for a moment. There are some things we CAN agree on that could yet save our country. Manufacturing. A country that produces little or no manufactured goods has no real economy to stand on. We keep looking the other way on this--yet loss of our manufacturing industry is surely one of the most important issues of our day. It is an economic problem and a national security problem. Congress must take up this problem if we are to stop the debt from growing, stop risking our future security.
