seeker, I'm a Romney supporter, but that provision only bans government restrictions - that is, a law or regulation.

There's nothing there preventing private citizens from voting and publicly advocating for or against a candidate based on his religious views.

And really, shouldn't we exclude, if not by law than at least by consensus, an al Qaeda or Khomeini style radical Muslim? And if we exclude them, shouldn't we also exclude a believer in old-style Shinto, the Emperor-worshiping, banzai-charging, kamikaze style? And esoteric Hitlerism - re-interpretations of European or Hindu paganism that worship or revere Hitler (such people are out there)?

Obviously Mormonism is a long way from such textbook extreme examples, but let's not overstate what the Constitution requires, or formulate a principle based on the "spirit" of the Constitution that interferes with common sense.

The irony of course is that many who are opposed to Romney because of his religion will shout at rallies and political meetings that we must maintain our fidelity to the constitution.

"no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."
