Everything wrong with Detroit is summed up by the story that the city wanted to use federal stimulus dollars to demolish its historic railway terminal. Now there is hope that the county and state will save it – if only as a cleaned up and secured space tourists can view without (as I did on my last visit) scrambling under the perimeter wires to trespass with a flashlight.

With today’s high copper prices, maybe New York City should demolish the Statue of Liberty and sell it for scrap. They could get a good price.

No, what’s wrong with Detroit is how the railway terminal, and many other buildings, became a ruin in the first place.

A city is only as good as its people. Electing Coleman “MFIC” Young for so long revealed what sort of people made up a majority of Detroit voters. Yes, the decline of the motor industry hurt Detroit. However, Detroit’s descent began before the motor industry hit the skids. Ironically, in the 1950s Detroit had one of the largest black middle classes in the nation while the United Auto Workers was one of the most progressive unions in the country. Detroit will never come back.
