Populist Mustard

I’m in California at my parents’ house this week. They’re both lifelong Orange County Republicans, McCain voters, and predisposed to dislike Obama, and when I played the “what kind of a man eats ketchup” audio for them, they couldn’t understand it. When I told them that the same criticism is making the rounds among certain conservative commentators, they were incredulous and then indignant.

lot of folks unused to being accused of having effete tastes were thinking to themselves, “Hey, wait a minute… mustard? I like mustard.”

It’s bad enough to use rhetoric that narrows your appeal to older white folks who live in small towns or suburbs. Now they’re managing to make the tent so small that only white non-urban folks who hate mustard pass the culture cue test.

To be fair David realized the hilarity of it even if some of his usual suspect posters had to use it as a platform for bashing Obama. As I mentioned on my posting the other day I actually heard some conservative radio guy going on about this on a portable radio that a worker had blaring at my local transfer station (aka the town dump). While I hurled odorous black plastic bags into a trash chute and empty gin bottles into a recycle bin some bozo is going on about Obama’s choice of condiments. It’s unreal.

With all this interest in ketchup and burgers and fries and mustard, maybe New Majority should include a regular recipe section: “Recipes for Moderates.” The cuisine is variable, but the portions are moderate.

They lost me when they decided that stupid and uneducated could be our VP. They didn’t leave the majority of us, we left them when they decided that it was ok to vote with their lower apendage.

Recommended toppings for a burger: Chopped onions and pickled beets, capers and a garlic sour cream dressing. Frying the burger in Winchestershire sauce goes without saying. Oh, and Steyn and Ingraham are two really dumb idiots.
