29. Do you think going to war in Afghanistan was the right thing for the United States to do or the wrong thing?

I pretty sure there is a poll conducted around the time of the Afghanistan invasion would show that Demoncrats predominately support the war. Nearly everyone in a America did. I’m not sure what your objective was in picking this particular question from the entire set of questions in the poll. In looking at this poll it doesn’t seem to be all that enlightening – meaning it doesn’t tell anyone anything they do not already know. But then a lot of polls are like that. Still it keeps the pollsters employed.

dmt3: Read the rest of the article, including the analysis. What they’re showing is that parts of Obama’s core base–blacks, women, and poorer voters–were significantly more opposed to more military action in Afghanistan than were other Americans. If military action in Afghanistan intensifies, and if casualties mount, Obama could face defections from his own base. In that case, Obama might have to reach out to us right-wingers, who as you know love all wars. :-)

First, as mentioned, Afghanistan has been tainted by Iraq, rightly or wrongly there’s a segment of the Democrats that think that the entire use of force is so tainted, so corrupted by the actions in Iraq, that it will take a tremendous amount of effort to convince them that the conflict was/is the right thing to do .

Second, placing a poll up with zero commentary makes me wonder. Do you have a purpose or point? So the Democrats think the conflict in Afghanistan was the wrong thing to to? What does that imply for the Republican Party and their efforts to garner a new majority? that we should try to steal Obama from the Democrats because he’s more in line with the Republicans than Democrats? Ok, I suppose I could buy that.

But that’s not what you’re thinking, and I suspect you put it up in an effort to thumb your nose at Obama, not realizing that very poll result helps solidify that Obama is more moderate than people on the right give him credit for.

That’ll help pull the independents back to the Republican party.

If you’re saying the Democrats are out of touch on this issue, I can buy that. However, by not taking the time to address the first, obvious, point I made above. nor by making an effort to show what public support was for the invasion in 2001, you leave me with the impression that you just prefer to stir the pot and troll.

expand and expound, it’ll really help.

Yeah, I’ve got to agree with Bloodstar. The Afghan campaign has been terribly tainted by Iraq as well as the general incompetence of both wars’ management and people are sick of it all. Data always requires interpretation so without any commentary from the Quinnipiac people is suspect. That said, I’m surprised. At the time of the attacks, approval of entry into Afghanistan was near universal.

I guess the Dems are getting their foreign countries mixed up. I can understand opposing action in Iraq because of 9/11, but Afghanistan? Al-Qaeda HQ?
