Mr. Kabaservice, you can correct the historical injustice by re-inserting your footnotes and copy-pasting this article into Wikipedia! That said, given the long history of American anti-communism, I question Hoffman's dismissal of McCarthy as a "totally new element" in the GOP. He can't have heard much different from his frenemies in the NAM. Perhaps they said it WASP-ier. Could there have been Catholic-Protestant class undertones to the fight with Bill Buckley's "National Review"?

Mr. Kabaservice didn't happen to mention where Mr. Paul Hoffman was born--so I googled for that. Mr. Hoffman was born in 1891, in Western Springs, Illinois. If Mr. Hoffman were considering a run for President today, that alone would disqualify him, right there. To the folks in Red States, Illinois is enemy territory, home of the Chicago Democratic machine politics and, of course, Obama himself.

My entire family (except for me) is Republican. And my entire family (including me) voted for Obama this year. If Hoffman were the typical Republican today, I personally still would have voted for Obama (being the evil liberal "troller" that I am), but I can guarantee you that I would have been the only one in my family to do so.
