But the point is, people do it all the time. It’s a rhetorical device, to convey a veneer of evenhandedness:

“I don’t mean to cause offense, but….”

“I really appreciate all you’ve done for the team, but….”

“I am a staunch defender of the First Amendment, but….”

“I have no interest in punishing anyone, but….”

It’s commonplace, hardly egregious.

No. Obama said he had no interest in punishing banks. It would be ridiculous for your parents to have said they had no interest in punishing you, and then proceed to do so.

I missed the speech. So, the worst of it was:

1. He called Iran by its official name;
2. He said something dismissive about Republicans;
3. He took personal responsibility for the problems of the healthcare reform bill;
4. He doesn’t want to ship jobs overseas; and
5. He said to the banks, what my parents said to me long ago: “this hurts me more than it hurts you.”
