otto: we’ve got 16% of the country living dire poverty up from about 11% in 2000

Sadly, this was to be expected. And until Republicans modify their positions, it will continue to be expected each time Republicans hold the oval office for a significant time period.

Well, there is hope that this increase in poverty in America is a short term phenomena related to the year plus long economic crisis we've been in, and not a structural issue that will plague us for a decade.

It does, however, highlight a phenomena that is often ignored by advocates of stripping government services down to the bone and "enabling" charities and the free market to take care of the indigent. When we have downturns, and the marketplace is causing a temporary increase in the poverty ranks, the contribution from government to provide the same level of social services increases. It's nice to think that charities could always provide, but the sad reality is that there is often at the same time a steep decline in charitable contributions, making the government's role even more important.
