My new column in National Post: “When are you too old to become a ski bum?” opens

“Life is difficult enough without throwing yourself off the side of a mountain.” That was my uncle Gerry’s opinion on skiing, and through most of my life the advice seemed sound. American friends expressed amazement that I could have grown up in Canada without learning to parallel or slalom. I answered: “Growing up in Canada, I learned to minimize my exposure to snow and frost.”

Never too old! I started my ski career on an abandoned ski slope in rural NY state where I spent days as a 4 year old, hiking up and skiing down. Then as I progressed to a open slope that even had a chair lift I again spent hours and days up and down. Recently I purchased a brand of ski that I used during the peak of my youth career. I’ve been skiing for years but this purchase has reignited my passion. Instead of becoming “over the hill”, I’m reuniting with my inner hill and managing life on the slant.
