Chancellor Angela Merkel recalls a chapter of history too often overlooked. The Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald had a second life – as a Soviet concentration camp.
Today we remember the victims of this place. This includes remembering the victims of the so-called Special Camp 2, a detention camp run by the Soviet military administration from 1945 to 1950. Thousands of people perished due to the inhumane conditions of their detention.

If Obama had said what Merkel did, DF would have interpreted it as an insult to Israel and the memory of the Holocaust, suggesting some kind of moral equivalency, etc… at least judging by DF’s blogging of Obama’s speech.

ltwpolitics: I’m with you. I don’t understand this new meme from David Frum.Yesterday, another article mentioned the Nazi murders of gays, gypsies, Slavs, etc., alongside the Nazi murder of Jews, as if they were all equivalent. That contradicts decades of mainstream history that the Nazis had a special obsession with eliminating Jews specifically. (Which seems to be true; in Mein Kampf, Hitler didn’t mention gypsies much, and he never called for the destruction of gays. But he ranted about Jews, on and on and on.)If Obama had just mentioned the genocide of Jews alongside all these other groups, he would have been criticized by many Jews, both here and in Israel and in Europe, for trivializing the Jewish experience.Since I don’t like to spin paranoid conspiracy theories, I will not speculate as to why New Majority has taken this tack.
