Tim Mak Liveblogs Ron Paul’s CPAC 2010 Address

The crowd was mostly students, and a standing-ovation accompanies the ‘walk-off-the-stage music’. Paul’s speech was most happily recieved by the younger crowd, and standing ovations (other than the final one) were mostly led by younger people.

The fact of the matter is that Paul sounded like he was on a rant, and not so much on a quest to persuade you of the virtues of his position.

While he tried to be conciliatory (“if you disagree with me, think about it – read about it”), his tone was of a preacher out to please an anxious choir – and sounded a little nutty as a result.

People start drifting out as the last sentence of Ron Paul speech’s rambles on for 30+ words…

Ron Paul: “All of those who disagree (with me).. Think about it! Read about it!” Points to financial crash of 08/09 as vindication of his doomsaying.

Ron Paul: As recently as 2000 we (Republicans) won elections on saying we wouldn’t be policemen of the world!

“No War Over Oil!” yells a member of the crowd. “Didn’t expect to hear that at CPAC,” whispers FF’s Shawn Summers.

“We’re in a perpetual war now.. It’s going to go on until we’re bankrupt.”

Ron Paul dates himself – he was in college during Suez crisis of 1956.

Canadian Hat-Tip: this was when Canada invented the concept of United Nations peacekeeping.

Paul is a little too excited. He would be more persuasive if he didn’t talk so quickly, like he was on a rant.

Michele Bachmann actually sounded more reasonable  (tone-wise) than this.

“We are on the brink of a financial cataclysmic event” because of debt, says Ron Paul.

The dollar will soon be rejected, says Paul. Then your liberties will REALLY be retracted!

Woodrow Wilson gets a lot boos. Never heard that before.

See, there’s lots of things about which I can disagree with Ron Paul. But I can also respect Ron Paul’s political contribution: he lives in the same universe I do, even if he has a very different perspective on it.

Not so the rest of the “conservative” universe. If the young conservatives are really cheering for Ron Paul, then that’s a hopeful sign to me that the *real* issues in the USA and the world will have a *real* debate about the *real* things in the future. Hope it’s not too late by then.

Most of us already knew that Howard Zinn and Ron Paul live in the same parallel universe.

Thankfully, it’s not the same universe the rest of us inhabit.

This is kind of off the subject, but I’ve been waiting at least a week to get an excuse. I would like for all of those who think the gold standard is such a wonderful idea to take a good look at the all of the fun the EU is having with the Greece issue. That is what we could look forward to if we go to the gold standard.

  • Carney

Ron Paul wants America to choose to lose in Iraq and Afghanistan, handing over contested battlegrounds to our vicious implacable enemies, and to flee in shame and humiliation. His being allowed to address a conservative gathering, let alone being welcomed at it, is a disgrace.

ltoro1, the situation in Greece has nothing to do with the gold standard. If a currency isn’t backed by anything, inflation and deflation will be reoccurring problems. Ever since the end of the Bretton-Woods system, the US dollar has exponentially decreased in value. Why is that? Educate yourself: http://www.Unelected.org

Carney, there’s nothing to win in Iraq and Afghanistan. The TALIBAN are not the enemies of the United States, Al Quaida is. The Taliban did not attack the United States on 9/11 and most of the hijackers were Saudi Arabian. The United States gave Saudi Arabia billions of dollars under President Bush, while bombarding Afghanistan. The US, under Bush(a conservative), gave billions to Musharaff of Pakistan, who was a military dictator all while taking down another military dictator in Iraq. Don’t you see any inconsistency with that?

I’m quite educated in money, banking, monetary policy, and international finance. The gold standard or any commodity standard is a system of fixed exchange rates nothing more nothing less. The euro is also a system of fixed exchange rates within the eurozone.

Sxnster I would recommend you educate yourself. College would be a good place to start.

Thankfully, it’s not the same universe the rest of us inhabit.

The universe you inhabit is a fantasy universe, where you believe incoherent things that are not actually true. The universe in which Carney inhabits is one in which national pride and shows of strength outweigh the actual lives of people. These are universes we should immediately consign to the trash heap, or we’ll never solve our actual problems.

CPAC was running a hour behind schedule and it did have TV obligations with Cspan thus Ron Paul had to hurry his speech and ad lib. Still a great speech and young people flock to his message of limited government and freedom. Better yet he scares the hell out of the Neocons!!

Watching CPAC now a days just makes me miss Ron. Not Paul but the real Ron:

I miss Reagan too. Especially his wisdom about the Middle East. Lets take a look at what he wrote in his memoirs.

” Perhaps we didn’t appreciate fully enough the depth of the hatred and the complexity of the problems that made the Middle East such a jungle. Perhaps the idea of a suicide car bomber committing mass murder to gain instant entry to Paradise was so foreign to our own values and consciousness that it did not create in us the concern for the marines’ safety that it should have.

In the weeks immediately after the bombing, I believe the last thing that we should do was turn tail and leave. Yet the irrationality of Middle Eastern politics forced us to rethink our policy there. If there would be some rethinking of policy before our men die, we would be a lot better off. If that policy had changed towards more of a neutral position and neutrality, those 241 marines would be alive today.”
    !
Sounds like that other Ron. The one who brought down the house at CPAC yesterday
