Kirk Runs to the Center

October 31st, 2009 at 4:03 pm by Jeb Golinkin | 2 Comments |

By proposing the “centrist” alternative to the Pelosi healthcare bill, House Representative Mark Kirk (R-IL) appears to be building the foundation on which to present himself as a “pragmatic” conservative in his upcoming run for Barack Obama’s old Senate seat.

If this is Kirk’s proposed health care plan, he’s not going to win.

Because his opponent will point out that there’s nothing in it.

Nothing to aid poor people who can’t afford insurance.

No guaranteed issue for those with pre-existing conditions. (If the states don’t provide sufficient assistance for those citizens–and many currently don’t–what happens then?)

There’s no estimate of whom will be covered.

There’s no estimate of how much it will cost, nor how much health care costs in America will rise.

It’s a one-page “plan” to reform an enormously complex health care system–without changing any existing aspects of it like employer-provided insurance–which alone tells you right there it’s a crock.

It’s things like this that illustrate that the GOP has never been serious about health care reform. It’s obvious that Kirk threw this up there as a strawman. There have been a zillion different “alternatives” being thrown up by the GOP in the last 6 months. None of them has been scored for cost and coverage.

Tell me one state where guaranteed issue has made health insurance more affordable and health care less expensive.
