Keeping Terror Trials at Gitmo

February 3rd, 2010 at 11:52 am by Elise Cooper | 4 Comments |

Rep. Tom Rooney (R-FL) just introduced a bill that would require that detainees held at Guantanamo Bay be tried in military commissions using the courtroom facility built at Guantanamo.  They have a brand new courtroom down there that was built for military commissions and would save the government millions from transferring these detainees to other facilities in the U.S.

I don’t think we should have them at Gitmo, but the concept of a civil trial in NYC or Newburgh is amazingly stupid, it is a maneuver that will win Obama no friends no matter what happens, since the Muslims he thinks he will impress think the Jews all rigged the trial anyways

    Gitmo should be closed.

But any terrorist who strikes at America from overseas (like the Big Cheese, Osama bin Laden) should be tried by a military tribunal, as befits any war criminals. War criminals aren’t entitled to Miranda rights, meddling by the ACLU, pouting by the liberals at the New York Times, liberal judges, liberal juries, or any of the other usual suspects in the peanut gallery. The only thing they’re entitled to is a swift conviction followed by a swift execution.

Rep Tom Rooney, a former Army lawyer and state prosecutor, knows what he’s talking about. Unlike Obama or Biden, Rooney’s been to Gitmo and it would be an utterly inexcusable expense and costly exposure of innocent civilians to have trials for foreign combatants anywhere but Gitmo.

Tom rooney put it this way back in July 2009. http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/foreign-policy/49490-the-tenuous-future-of-gitmo-rep-tom-rooney

The courtroom facility is in place. The best of technology is there. Security is all but assured. If terrorists want to travel to Havana to protest, let ‘em have at it… it’s probably safer for them than Manhattan at this point. Heck, for that matter Havana was always safer for Eric Holder than Manhattan.

In fact, from the House Judiciary hearing on Gitmo last year, I think Eric Holder could take along yet another democrat Conscientious Objector on the War on Terror, Rep Brad Sherman (D-CA), who was eager to change the subject of the Judiciary Committee’s hearing.

Despite CO/WOT types like Holder and Sherman, Rooney will pick up a number of Democrat cosponsors. It’ll be a bipartisan effort. It’s a shame that the WH and Eric Stedman Holder is so tone-deaf. Maybe Oprah can stage an intervention for Eric Stedman Holder? Get him and the other Democrats some hearing aids?

And now it turns out that the WH’s Chief of Sleaze, Rahm Emanuel, knew that allowing Eric Holder to move the trials to NYC would undermine the Obama Administration’s effort to close down Gitmo.

It’s all fine and good for the Chief of Sleaze to draw a line in the sand for the tone-deaf Eric Stedman Holder, but the bigger question is IF there was a battle between two top dawgs in the Obama dys-Administration, wouldn’t that imply the Big Guy, Mr Ego, Obama himself had to referee this call and approve it? Smoking gun anyone? Hmmmm.

I get that everyone made it clear to Eric Stedman Holder the political peril of going forward with “his” (sic) decision to move the trials out of military courts and into civilian courts in NYC… but that’s just setting the political cover for the Big Guy, Mr Ego, Obama Messiah. Sword ready; cue Eric. No one should care about whether or not the president has political cover; the question is did Obama approve of the change of venue and tact?

Because if he did, it’s a huge signal to our allies and our enemies that Obama is pure amateur hour, 24×7. Of course, maybe he’s just sly fox on the diplomatic front… lulling our enemies into thinking that Americans are dunces and everyone internationale is positively brilliant. Because with this decision, that’s what it looks like.

Nawh, no chance of that… you’d need experience to pull off a foxy subversive move like that and Obama ain’t got no experience on the diplomatic front… and as a lawyer, his best days were in L school and at a non-profit… not exactly “experience”.

Why did we elect him? Seems all fuzzy & vague at this point.
