If by bringing the world economy to a halt to slow illegal immigration, then yes public policy has worked.
I actually think illegal immigration problem still exist & will return as the economy returns.
Now its off the right wing radio agenda therefore off their listens agenda. But those lemmings are loyal and will follow their talk masters direction, so it will return.

"As public policies succeed, politics gets de-radicalized"

I am not sure what you mean by this. The last time we tried immigration with President Bush and a Democratic Congress, it got shot down. If a republican president couldn't do it, good luck to a democratic president.

IMHO, after health care reform, immigration is the next difficult issue. My evidence is simple: Joe Wilson. Look at how much money he got by picking on illegal immigrants who have become the scapegoats for angry tea bag people.

In this political climate, the economy will take center stage. Thus I expect some sort of Wall Street regulations, after some executives are offer the angry mob for appeasement. Then comes energy. Then comes the 2010 election. Then, ... who knows after that.

Unless some republicans and democrats have the guts to push it, nobody is going to touch immigration with a ten foot pole.
