…….Independant……can’t count and a master of the non sequitur…..do you know how many people enrol in the military each year and how many people watch tv or go to the movies…..there’s a small, just a small, difference…..but I agree about the sanitized reporting…..if we’d seen real blood we’d have been out of Iraq after a year.

I remember, not long ago, that farLeft trolls like you ottoBS were gleeful about changes some service groups made about lowering non-violent felony conviction standards… which, when investigated, proved to be pure rumor by the farLeft.

Why is it that farLeft trolls hate so much those who serve or those who battle America’s enemies to Keep America Safe? Contrary to what you might want to believe, ottoBS, people haven’t even seen the real thing on nightly liberal newscasts –it’s too dangerous for the war correspondents to get out and gather the story. Daniel Pearl comes to mind.

…..Standard rightwing whining by Schaeffer and his camp followers …….Actually Clint Eastwood’s two movies about the pacific war picked up on racist issues and you could hardly call him a Hollywood liberal…….I suspect the low viewership has little or nothing to do with Tom Hank’s comments and more to do with the sun coming out and perhaps a declining interest in war movies generally……people have had too much of the real thing.

The scenes of fighting in steaming jungles against an Asian enemy who used dirty tactics and tortured our men is subliminally reminding Americans of Vietnam–a war they would very much like to forget.

There is a false choice here –we can watch “The Pacific” for all the reasons outlined in your good article.

But we don’t have to forget Hanks’ stupid, irrelevant comments. Like with another limo liberal hatchet job on the truth –”The Green Zone”– America can choose to deny the Hollywood elites their money and acclaim. The marketplace should mean something; making political movies should have a consequence. Just like elections. Just like votes.

P2. Fragmentation of audience and dvrs make ratings less important as you said. If the series stands up it will be a big seller on dvd for the holidays.

P3. My grandfather fought in the Pacific and I have a larger connection to that part of the war than Europe. The cultural memory is skewed in the U.S. in a way that it wasn’t during the war. The Japanese were the ones attacking us. That is where the war started for us. D day was an event long into the war and one that only gained prominence afterward. Besides, the Russians were already winning the European Theatre by June ‘44. Americans would do well to learn how much the Russian’s sacrificed.
