By inference, Senator Clay explains why Republicans should wish that Obama is reelected in 2012. The Six Year Itch in 2014 should work for Republicans as it has for the out party for much of the past fifty years. Remember the giant Democratic gains in 1958, 1974, 1986 and 2006. The Republicans won a tremendous Six Year Itch landslide in 1966. The only year in recent times where the Six Year Itch did not saturate the poltical environment was the special year of 1998 when the economy was flying high and not many Americans seemed to care about Bill Clinton's extramarital affairs, at least not to the extent that conservatives were enthralled by President Clinton's antics. Since the Republicans have no real program, they would do best to vigorously oppose the Obama program and let it collapse under its own weight.
