“I’d say a woman who had already gone through labor 4 times and was traveling with the approval of her doctor could be trusted to handle decisions concerning her pregnancy.”

No, that is flat out wrong, and any doctor who would tell anyone to board a long plane ride from Texas to Alaska is a quack. I think you are straining to justify the unjustifiable because it has to do with Palin, check any medical blog and see recommendations for what to do after someone’s water breaks. It doesn’t matter how many kids you have either. My wife had 3 kids, and she was young yet each pregnancy had its own timetable. Do you even know what it means when a woman’s water breaks? This is not having contractions, her amniotic fluid sac drained out.

If she had a history of Braxton Hicks contractions, I could say maybe, but this was absolutely labor. Her amniotic fluid sac drained. I can’t imagine the insanity of getting on a plane after that happens. There is no way a doctor, especially one doing it over the phone, can make any such determination.

She put the babies life at undeniable risk, she put the passengers lives at risk (an emergency landing is dangerous, planes have to be rerouted, etc.) and she even put her own life at risk, all for what purpose? How is having a baby in a Texas hospital bad? Especially the very advanced ones in that area.

No, I am sorry, but you have jumped the shark on this one. A discerning and intelligent adult looks at facts and makes a determination based on the facts alone. There is absolutely no justification for what she did. And to blow it off as being an equivalent to a minor thing does disservice to every woman who has a baby. When a woman says her water breaks you get her to the hospital asap.

If you can show me any medical periodical anywhere that states that boarding a plane after the water breaks is no big deal, then I will retract what I said. But there is no way you will find it.

Look, I am not not going to vote for her based on this, but because I find her utterly stupid in every other respect. But she has made this part of her story. She had no reason to, even if it is true. To not realize people are going to think the story is nuts is also nuts, even if it is true. Even if it were true, which it is not, I would never say “yeah, I was roaring drunk when my wife’s water broke and it is a wonder how I got her to the hospital with us all alive.” So if true this is something she should hide, not tout. Because it is undeniably nuts to get on a plane after your amniotic fluid sac breaks.

The simple reason the story of Trig and his birth is important is that Sarah Palin herself has made him and his birth the center of her political universe. It wins her votes and adoration.

If she has embellished this story, or lied about it in any way, then her integrity is at risk. And I would think that a person gunning for the highest office in the land (and it certainly looks she is heading in that direction or at least for RNC chair), should not be given to lying about a pregnancy.

There is no earthly reason for any woman to do that, unless she is currying favor with a favored possible electorate. And that’s a BIG no-no.

As a woman who gave birth to three children, I can attest to the urgency of imminent birth or dangerous repercussions when ‘water breaks.’ At the least, the story makes it sound like she put her baby in unnecessary risk…and that does not speak well of her.

Im not straining to justify anything as there is nothing here I have any need to justify.

“A discerning and intelligent adult looks at facts and makes a determination based on the facts alone.”

Yes and youre coming both to a judgment of fact and a medical diagnosis based on virtually no facts. Try not to land on that shark.

  • anniemargret

mthen: We are questioning Sarah Palin’s own version of the birth story, a legitimate query which puts her integrity into question. The story is strange from her own lips.

If it is media fabrication, the truth will out. If she made up some of it, it will out. So do you know the facts or are you taking SP’s word for it. She has already been caught in many lies and half-truths (see Andrew Sullivan for a comprehensive list)

  • easton

Yes and youre coming both to a judgment of fact and a medical diagnosis based on virtually no facts.

Sure, you want me to show you all of the medical web sites that urge people to go to the hospital after the water breaks. Lets remove Sarah out of this story. Show me any scientific evidence anywhere that suggests when the water breaks it is no big deal.

anniemargret, I see 4 possible likelihoods, 1: What she said was 100% true, which means she is nuts. 2: What Sullivan says is true, which I also thinks is nuts (at the very least one of Johnstons family would have said, hey she was pregnant before) 3: She fabricated the story out of whole cloth to make her look “heroic” or what have you, when in fact nothing happened until she got home. 4. She had a contraction, passed if off as false but she (with her doctors blessing) thought it best to head home, when she arrived home she found she was indeed in real labor and then had the baby.

I find 4 most likely. She basically exaggerated it all to make her look tough and a pioneer type woman (this is kind of what Hillary did with her Bosnian sniper fire story). There is some basis in fact (she was in early onset of labor, Bosnia was a war zone, etc.) but it gets blown up more and more with each telling.

I simply don’t get mthens digging in her heels on this one. The narrative is ludicrous. Democrats ripped Hillary when she made her Bosnia sniper story, but she had the good sense to back away from it.

bloggy, why do you care? You don’t have to read any of this, and if you have no interest in it, keep your comments to yourself. People enjoy to talk about a great deal of topics, you yourself have a blog wherein you write about things I have absolutely no interest in, hence I don’t read it and I certainly wouldn’t comment there and say “amazing, a blog devoted to boring, parochial interests” It means something to you and I imagine your 5 readers, so it ain’t my concern.

  • anniemargret

Who knows? But my basic point is that if she embellishes a pregnancy to get more attention, more adoration, more votes…then she is both crass and self-serving and all the criticism that she uses her kids as political props holds.

That is where I’m coming from. As a woman and mother I abhor this. I simply don’t admire this woman who is wearing the crown of “mom ‘o of the year”, and then a story like Trig’s birth is raised and questions ensue.

If she did what she said she did, taking two planes and driving down snowy mountain roads to get to a hospital that didn’t even have equipment for special needs babies, when *her water broke* then she is nuts…and as irresponsible as it gets .

It also calls into question her ‘mom o’ the year’ status. In the end, it is not a favorable thing for her or about her, and if she were wiser, or her fans more astute, she would not even bring it up!

  • easton

anniemargret, absolutely right, and it has nothing to do with party or ideology. Republicans can not fathom that if a Democrat woman had done the same we would say she was nuts as well.
