This isn't a shocker - because Angela Merkel has been doing what a Conservative Party which desires to lock in a long-term majority does ... moves to co-opt the center, rather than lurching government hard to the right.

Had George Bush not filled Federal Agencies with Heritage-vetted ideologues who believed that government that works best is government which governs least ... followed up on his 2000 campaign pledges to regulate CO2 with something more than 8 years of "studies" and stonewalling of scientific opinions from inside the Federal Bureaucracy that called for action ... engaged in a limited war to eliminate Al Qaeda in Afghanistan (and Pakistan), rather than moving the war to Iraq with plans to advance on to Syria and Iran in his back pocket ... and followed the lead of Reagan, following his initial massive tax cuts with a series of tax increases which moderated some of the impacts of those cuts on the federal treasury .. there's a pretty good chance that we'd have a Republican in the White House now, as well as much more balance in the House and Senate.
