Down the Memory Hole

“This [Sarah Palin] is a woman who has got into a position of leadership by sending very powerful sexual signals. And we see that in the way that men like her much more than women do.”

She’s Sending, but He Ain’t Receivin’

Did David Frum really say this about Sarah Palin? Apparently so, and on PBS:

This is a woman who has got into a position of leadership by sending very powerful sexual signals. And we see that in the way that men like her much more than women do.

With this line of attack, David seems to be channeling his inner Andrew Sullivan.

(By the way, when I saw her campaign in N.H., I was surrounded by moms with strollers.)

- Mark Steyn, NRO The Corner, Nov. 19, 2009.

“I’m sure I’m not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, “Hey, I think she just winked at me.” And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. ” – Rich Lowry, NRO The Corner, Oct. 3, 2009.

“Plus she’s a housewife. Before that she’s a babe. I saw a picture.”
-Rush Limbaugh, Feb. 28, 2008.

Makes one wonder where she would be today if she were unattractive. On the other hand, that can be said about lots of folks – some of whom are quite competent.

One wonders how old Rich Lowry is emotionally. Seventeen? Perhaps Todd Palin should have a talk with Rich Lowry.

Remembering an earlier tribute to Palin by Steyn:

“She hasn’t voted 397 times against this or that in the U.S. Senate, because she’s been running a state, and a town, and a commercial fishing operation. She’s a doer, not a talker, which is why so many of my fellow professional talkers disdain her.

And now … while someone else is “doing” the work of running the State of Alaska that she was elected to do, what is Sarah up to?

    Ummmm ….

Lowry. The conservative version of Matthews thrill up his leg.

The conservative version of Matthews thrill up his leg.

Actually, more like the hetero version of Matthews.

    Don’t forget Matthew’s long and strong man-crush on Bush…

“There are some things you can’t fake. Either you can throw a strike from sixty feet or you can’t. Either you can rise to the occasion on the mound at Yankee Stadium with 56,000 people watching or you can’t. On Tuesday night, George W. Bush hit the strike zone in the House that Ruth Built…. This is about knowing what to do at the moment you have to do it–and then doing it. It’s about that ‘grace under pressure’ that Hemingway gave as his very definition of courage.”

“He looks great in a military uniform. He looks great in that cowboy costume he wears when he goes West. We’re proud of our President. Americans love having a guy as President, a guy who has a little swagger, who’s physical, who’s not a complicated guy like Clinton…. Women like a guy who’s President. Check it out.”

But he was also fond of McCain:

“A lot of people like the cut of John McCain’s jib, his independence, his maverick reputation.”

And Giuliani, who was the “perfect candidate”–the one who “looks like a President,” who “acts and talks like a President,” who “rises to the occasion” and is “the one tough cop who was standing on the beat when we got hit last time and stood up and took it,” and who, to top it all off, got “that pee smell out of that subway.”

But for whatever reason, Matthews didn’t fawn over Al Gore: “What could that possibly be saying to women voters, three buttons? Is there some hidden Freudian deal here or what? I don’t know, I mean, Navy guys used to have buttons on their pants.”

Steyn, in his Nov. 19 posting, also says, “(By the way, when I saw her campaign in N.H., I was surrounded by moms with strollers.)”. Perhaps she has a wider appeal than just to randy old geezers.

David Frum: building a conservatism that can win again by bashing prominent conservatives on NPR, CNN, in Time, Newsweek and any other liberal media outlet that will let him yammer.

    Comical, just comical.

    “Comical, just comical.”

…….What’s comical is that folks like you think the GOP has any future with Palin as the face of the party……..outside of about 25% of the electorate she has about as much appeal as Tammy Faye Baker to whom she bears a somewhat passing resemblance (not physically but stylistically).

TV has put a premium on handsomeness.

Abe Lincoln, Harry Truman, could never have gotten elected today. Not photogenic enough.

OTOH, Bill Clinton was a competent President, yet he had a certain handsomeness and he was quite the ladies’ man.

“OTOH, Bill Clinton was a competent President, yet he had a certain handsomeness and he was quite the ladies’ man.”

……Not as handsome as that other ladies man JFK who along with FDR and Reagan are probably the three “handsomest” presidents we’ve had

Jeez, otto, why not just let conservatives nominate a completely unelectable nonentity, thus ensuring years of dominance for your party of compassion, diversity, and intellectual superiority?
