Bachmann’s Fundraising Juggernaut

Despite all the hype surrounding Sarah Palin’s recent fundraising haul, sick few are noticing the real fundraising giant in the Republican Party: Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Monday’s news that Sarah PAC raised more than $865,000 in the second quarter was enough to send the blogosphere into a tizzy about whether Palin would run for President in 2012.

But let’s put the numbers into some context. Despite having all the time in the world to raise money for her PAC, Palin was outraised by Mitt Romney in March and April alone (Romney’s Freedom PAC hasn’t submitted their formal FEC filings yet – the deadline is on Thursday).

And Michele Bachmann raised $1.7 million in the last quarter, more than the erstwhile Republican vice-presidential candidate, even though she had to balance fundraising with her congressional duties and her campaign for reelection. More importantly, Bachmann’s contributors were limited by FEC regulations to a maximum of $2,400, while Palin’s contributors were each allowed to donate up to $5,000 to her PAC.

Bachmann is raising spectacular amounts of money. So the question should be: why isn’t Palin, a national figure with more media coverage than Bachmann, at least keeping pace?

Fools and their money are soon parted.

Plus are we seeing the GOP support for Citizens united and the kickback of big corporations in this?

Because Palin fans already spent their money on her book and are saving to buy the next one.

Because Palin is not as crazy as Bachmann, more stupid and uninformed than batsh*t insane.

Sometimes I wonder whether the new wave (brought on my cable TV, talk radio and the internet) of funding candidates in states you’ve never even driven through will one day end, or at least severely weaken, the claim that “all politics are local”. On some level, anyway, Bachmann’s ability to raise tremendous amounts of money has little to do with what she does for her district, and more to do with what she says on Hannity.

    Chris
Politics hasn’t been local at least the new york election where the club for growth interfered, putting in a candidate who didn’t even understand the local issues in order to out the incumbent Scozzafava in favor of a hand picked ideologically pure candidate (who lost).

It would be nice if all the national organizations would stay out of local elections but with the new supreme court ruling of financing, we can kiss that concept good-bye.

The only good news out of Minnesota is that Bachman’s opponent is keeping up with her fund raising.

Bachman is in my opinion the most outrageous of the unqualified candidates currently sticking her foot in her mouth. Her statements are so stupid as well as provocative, I can’t help but hope even she doesn’t mean them. She is a dangeous woman who needs to be stopped.

Damn you, Terry. You beat me to it.

BTW, Chris Matthews really let loose on Bachmann last night. He’s even more openly contemptuous of her than he is Palin, but I guess it’s understandable, given how she came on his show two years ago and — without any sense of irony — proposed that there be McCarthyite investigations of key Democrats.

Let’s be fair. Bachmann’s opposition gets money from all over the country as well.

“with her congressional duties” I am sorry, but what has Bachmann accomplished in Congress?
She has never written a bill that passed. She rarely signs on as a cosponsor to anything that passes. In addition during her time as MN. State Senator from 2001 to 2006 she had only been co-author of one bill that passed the Big Marine park reserve disabled veterans rest camp regulation. She was 1 of 5 authors.
1 bill (which I admit is good and well intentioned, I mean who really is going to be against disable war veterans, so it is pretty much a gimmee). in 10 years of Government service. The woman is a disgrace.

My elderly, FOX News watching parents have contributed to Bachmann’s campaign. However, they haven’t bothered to contribute to the rather sane-seeming R candidate challenging the D incumbent in the district they live in. I think it because he doesn’t go on the teevee and entertain them with his stand-up comedy routine the way Bachmann does. So, I guess my take on this is: every dollar that goes to Bachmann is a dollar that doesn’t go to a Republican who would not embarrass the party every time he opens his mouth.

One thing you’ve got to hand to crazy, and that’s the fact that it has enthusiasm. And when crazy gets an audience, watch out!

  • Demosthenes

Yep, the fund raising queen of the crazy wing of the Republican Party. (Are there many Republicans left that are outside of that “wing”?). We know how she raises so much money, as alluded to by Watusie. This bubbleheaded nitwit appears on Fox “News” and people like my own elderly parents love her. She is young, attractive and says batshit crazy stuff with aplomb. This lets bored, wealthy right wingers (like my parents) send her money and feel good that they are helping fight the Kenyan/Socialist/Nazi/Indonesian/Muslim in the White House.

I wasn’t denying this, actually – I was making a broad political point using her as an example.

However, if you think about it, it does seem to me that — at least now, at the moment — Republicans are likely more the beneficiaries of this “non-local politics” approach than Dems, but this is likely just due to the fact that Republicans own the national airwaves more than Dems do via Talk Radio and Cable, and I would presume that Cable/Talk Radio subscribers are much more likely to donate in this way than are readers of national newspapers.

But that has little to do with political groups, and more to do with the current dominance of those media by one side, but if the Dems even flip that around, they’ll benefit from those donations more.

Bachmann is running for reelection in about 4 months. Palin is not running this year.

  • TerryF98

Must be something in the water! :-)

“Two top staffers to Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann left their jobs Tuesday, leaving the confrontational congresswoman without a chief of staff in her House office or a finance director for her reelection campaign.

Ron Carey, a former chairman of the Minnesota Republican Party, becomes the fifth chief of staff to leave Bachmann’s office since she was first elected just four years ago.”

Bachmann and Palin – two glammed up Harpies.

Bachmann’s pathetic defense of poor ole BP being raked over the coals for those greedy selfish Gulf state residents took the top award for GOP Idiot of the month.
